Charitable Grants Awarded to Four Organizations

Charitable grants totaling more than $4,000 were awarded to four Lee County-based organizations by the Rotary Club of Fort Myers South at its meeting on August 25, 2014: Hope Clubhouse, Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida, Interfaith Charities of South Lee, and The Music Foundation of Southwest Florida.  Rotary South’s 2014-2015 President Rebecca Goff is pictured with a representative of each organization. Hope Clubhouse offers opportunities to people living with mental illness in Southwest Florida for meaningful work, education, friendships, and access to housing in a supportive, caring, dignified and respectful community setting. This non-profit organization received $1,028 from Rotary South to be used towards software that important to securing additional funding for their mission. Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida runs a week-long residential camp for adults with special needs called Trailways Camp. Its mission is to remove the social isolation often felt by people with disabilities by providing opportunities for fun, friends and support. Through outdoor activities, exercise, crafts and more, campers have the opportunity to develop recreational skills and build friendships. Rotary South donated $1,500 towards three camp scholarships. Interfaith Charities of South Lee is a community service organization operating in south Lee County for more than 20 years. Its mission is to feed the hungry, guide the young, and aid the needy.  Interfaith Charities received a $1,110 grant from Rotary South to be used towards new stainless steel tables and shelves for their food pantry. The Music Foundation of Southwest Florida has been serving area music students since 1991.  Each year, they present a summer music camp for middle school aged youth, with a low student-teacher ratio so students receive as much individual attention as possible.  Rotary South donated $500 towards summer camp scholarships. Jim Larkin – Rotarian of the Month

The Rotary Club of Fort Myers South has named Jim Larkin Rotarian of the Month for July 2014. He was presented with the award in appreciation for his continuing support of our weekly meetings and special events at the Crowne Plaza where he serves as General Manager. Jim has been instrumental in keeping the service level high and our costs reasonable over the years. According to the Crownechronicles blog, Jim has been in the hospitality industry for more than 30 years. His interest in the hospitality industry started while he was attending high school in Honolulu Hawaii. He has worked in the industry since the age of 16 in Hawaii starting as a restaurant dishwasher at a Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor. After graduating the University of Houston, Jim’s hotel career took him across the country and back again, working in locations such as Kennebunkport ME, Albuquerque NM, Durango CO, and Monterey CA. In addition to his professional responsibilities and involvement in the Rotary Club of Fort Myers South, Jim is personally involved in numerous charitable causes including Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County. Our Exchange Student from Denmark

In the wee hours of Sunday, August 3, 2014, Rotarians gathered at Southwest Florida International Airport to greet a very special visitor.  Fredrick, our club-sponsored exchange student from Denmark was greeted by warmly around 1:00 A.M. The welcoming committee included Rotary South President Rebecca Goff, Secretary Steve Wassmann, Rotary District 6960 Governor Pete Doragh and Governor Elect Cyndi Doragh. According to Rebecca Goff, Fredrick prefers to be called “Fred”.  He has already enjoyed several native experiences including celery with peanut butter, shrimp, and visiting the beach.  Fred attended our luncheon today and will be presenting information about his native country of Denmark at an upcoming meeting.  He will living with a host family and attending South Fort Myers High School for the year. Rotary Youth Exchange is the opportunity of a lifetime for the more than 8,000 students who participate each year. The program is a study-abroad opportunity for young people designed to help foster global understanding.  To qualify, students must be ages 15-19 who have demonstrated leadership, are flexible and willing to try new things, are open to cultural differences and can serve as an ambassador for their country.  For more information, visit the Rotary International web site’s Youth Exchanges...
