Dominican Republic Water Project

Rotary Club of Fort Myers South went international this year! In March, members of the club headed to the small mountain village of Los Higos for a Dominican Republic water project. Once there, they took part in building and installing rainwater harvesting tanks in the houses and schools of the community. Rotary Club of Fort Myers South partnered with Club Rotario Santiago Gurabito (the Rotary Club of Santiago Gurabito) for this incredible project that enhanced the lives of the residents in the community. The project took place over the course of three days, Friday, March 13 through Sunday, March 16. The goal was to provide the clean water filtration systems for 20 homes, but once the organizations were done, 50 homes were equipped with the systems. Rainwater harvesting is the collection of rainwater for reuse as opposed to allowing the rainwater to runoff. Once the rainwater is collected, it is used for drinking, for storage in the event of natural disaster, for irrigation, for gardening, and for the raising of livestock. It can also prevent low-lying floods and reduce the demand on local wells, which contributes to their longevity. This was a tremendous opportunity for the club to utilize its time and talent for this Dominican Republic water project. They saw the project through from fundraising efforts to the construction and installation of the rainwater harvesting tanks. Rotary South Recognizes Scholar-Athletes

Rotary Club of Fort Myers South will honor 36 nominees and announce the scholarship recipients and other award winners at its Scholar-Athlete Awards banquet from 7 to 9 p.m. May 6, 2015 at the Crowne Plaza in Fort Myers. The scholarship program recognizes top athletes from area high schools based on athletic and academic achievement, along with strength of character Joe Dooley will deliver the keynote address. Dooley is in his second season as Head Coach of the Florida Gulf Coast University men’s basketball team.  In 2013-14 Dooley guided the Eagles to their first Atlantic Sun Conference regular-season championship and first trip to the NIT. This is the eleventh year the Southwest Florida Rheem Team – a philanthropic group of HVAC professionals – has served as a major sponsor of the event, and the fifth year it has served as the overall Scholarship Sponsor. In addition to sponsoring the scholarships, the Rheem Team hosts an online People’s Choice Scholar-Athlete Award, where visitors to www.swflrheemteam.com can vote for their favorite student, who then has a chance to win an iPad.
